DAVAO CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines —The best way to end the war in Ukraine and prevent a nuclear war between Russia and the West led by the United States is to oust President Vladimir Putin.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte made the remark in an interview on Monday night with controversial televangelist Apollo Quiboloy over Sonshine Media Network Inc.
Quiboloy had asked him to comment on the ongoing war in Ukraine, which spawned by Russia’s invasion of its neighbor in February last year.
Duterte said that Putin, which in various instances before he called a “friend,” could be inclined to make true his threat of launching nuclear warheads.
‘I think Putin will go for it’
“You place Putin in one corner, he might be tempted to push the nuclear button,” Duterte said.
He said the probability could be even higher if Russian forces would suffer a rout on the battlefield.
“If he cannot accept defeat, he loses face. I think Putin will go for it,” he said.
“Our best bet there is the military guys in Russia. The military is the only force there that can stop him. They can stage a coup d’etat — oust him to prevent a total nuclear war,” said the former president, who pampered the military and the police during his term from 2016 to 2022.
According to Duterte, the military in Russia is now at a crossroads.
“Go to war until kingdom come. Or stop the war and spare the world of an unnecessary spectacle of a nuclear war,” he said. “And the generals, I think, the younger ones, I’m sure they are planning to do what should be the next move.”
Duterte stressed this point: “Nobody really wants to go to war because if that happens, the first victim of the nuclear warheads would be Russia. Russia will be demolished to the ground.”
l Putin’s ‘many errors’
Last year, during his final days in office, Duterte, known internally as ‘The Punisher’ for his bloody crackdown against illegal drugs, slammed Putin’s invasion of Ukraine which led to massive civilian deaths.
On Monday, Duterte rebuked Putin’s “many errors” in Ukraine, which he said included “widespread violations of human rights, and perpetrated war crimes, killing civilians and bombing cities with nary a care on who will get killed or hurt.”
“My God, I have never [seen] so much destruction perpetrated by [one] nation on another,” Duterte said.
He noted that Russia’s military unleashed “a barrage of bombs and cannon balls and everything, hitting civilian targets, including residential, killing children, women, men, and everything.”
“It’s a classic case of a terror [operation],” he said.
For these, Putin could surely face prosecution for war crimes, said Duterte, who himself is now facing a probe by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity arising from his administration’s drug war.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Manila on Tuesday night, joining other high ranking US government officials in back-to-back visits to the Philippines under the Marcos administration.
Austin was the third notable US official to come to the country. He followed US Vice President Kamala Harris, who was in Manila in November last year, and State Secretary Antony Blinken, who also flew to the Philippines in July.
The three of them have the same agenda: to reaffirm the Western giant’s military commitment to the Philippines and advance its interest in the Indo-Pacific region.
Austin’s visit came on the heels of China’s increased activities in the South China Sea—an area which the US sees to have a crucial role in its economy.
US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson welcomed Austin, who first went to South Korea, another US ally, as he returned for the second time in the country. “His visit shows the United States’ ironclad commitment to our Philippine #FriendsPartnersAllies,” Carlson said.
According to the Defense Department website, Austin’s trip would allow him to reaffirm “the deep commitment of the United States to work in concert with allies and partners in support of the shared vision of preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
During his trip, Austin would meet with President Ferdinand ”Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his Filipino counterpart, Carlito Galvez Jr., said Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez.

The husband of a Massachusetts woman who allegedly strangled to death their three children—including an eight-month-old—said he has forgiven her already, and urged the public to follow suit.
Lindsay Clancy, a nurse, was charged with murder after allegedly killing Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 months) while her husband Patrick was out getting food. Lindsay also reportedly tried to take her own life.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Lindsay for two counts of homicide, three counts of strangulation, and three counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, NBC News reported.
She remains hospitalized, while prosecutors would be arraigning her on murder charges as soon as they could, according to NBC News.
"I want to ask all of you that you find it deep within yourselves to forgive Lindsay, as I have," Patrick said in a statement.
"The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring towards everyone—me, our kids, family, friends, and her patients. The very fibers of her soul are loving. All I wish for her now is that she can somehow find peace."
Without providing details, Patrick took note of his wife's condition she's reportedly struggling with.
Authorities, meanwhile, believe she could be suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Not to be confused with postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis can come within a couple of weeks after birth. While those who get it had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, most patients have no previous psychiatric problems, WebMD noted.
Symptoms include:
Belief in something that’s not real (delusions)
Seeing, hearing, or experiencing imaginary things (hallucinations)
Agitation
Heightened energy or sex drive
Depression, anxiety, or confusion
Insomnia
Paranoia and suspicious feelings
Constant mood swings
Feeling disconnected from your baby
In any case, Patrick said their marriage was "wonderful and diametrically grew stronger."
He noted that people can have "bad days," and that nothing matched Lindsay's "intense love" for their kids and dedication to being a mother.
“She’s recently been portrayed largely by people who have never met her and never knew who the real Lindsay was," Patrick said.
He also remembered their children, noting the shock and pain are "excruciating and relentless."
"I’m constantly reminded of them and with the little sleep I get, I dream about them on repeat," he said. "Cora, Dawson, and Callan were the essence of my life and I’m completely lost without them."
Patrick's relative, meanwhile, started an online fundraiser via GoFundMe to help pay for his medical bills, funeral services, and legal fees.

WASHINGTON, United States — Four men were transferred from Haiti to the United States Tuesday to face criminal charges in the July 7, 2021, assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, the US Justice Department announced.
The department said Haitian-American dual citizens James Solages, 37 and Joseph Vincent, 57, and Colombian citizen German Alejandro Rivera Garcia, 44, are charged with conspiring to commit murder or kidnapping outside the United States.
A fourth man, Haitian-American Christian Sanon, 54, is charged with smuggling ballistic vests from the United States to Haiti for use in the assassination plot.
The four will appear in federal court in Miami on Wednesday.
The US Justice department has already charged three others in the assassination, with Sanon, who the department called an “aspiring political candidate,” a key leader of the operation.
It said Sanon recruited about 20 Colombians with military training and led by Rivera Garcia to help carry out the assassination.
The Colombian squad shot Moise dead on the night of July 6 to 7, 2021 in his private residence in Port-au-Prince.
“On July 6, 2021, Solages, Vincent, Rivera and others met at a house near President Moise’s residence, where firearms and equipment were distributed and Solages announced that the mission was to kill President Moise,” the department alleged.
US law is being applied in this case because the plan to kill the Haitian president was allegedly partly organized on US soil in Florida, by American-Haitian nationals.
The three charged with the assassination, along with three men arrested last year, face up to life in prison.
Sanon faces up to 20 years for his role in supplying the operation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he would be willing to consider serving as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine if asked by both warring countries and the United States.
“If asked by all relevant parties, I’ll certainly consider it, but I’m not pushing myself in,” Netanyahu told CNN in an interview. He added it would have to be the “right time and the right circumstances.”
Israel’s close ally the United States would also need to ask because “you can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen,” he said.
Netanyahu said he was asked to be a mediator shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February of last year but he declined because he was Israel’s opposition leader at the time, not the prime minister. “I have a rule: one prime minister at a time,” he said.
Netanyahu would not say who asked him to serve in the role but he said the request was “unofficial.”
Ukraine asked Netanyahu’s predecessor, Naftali Bennett, to act as a mediator and Bennett met in March with Russian President Vladimir Putin and also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky but he was unable to broker a peace deal.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is not expected to raise matters on the Filipino “comfort women” during his visit to Japan, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Wednesday.
In a pre-departure briefing ahead of the President’s official working visit to the Land of the Rising Sun, DFA Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs Neal Imperial said this is because all war-related compensation claims by the Philippines government are already settled.
“All war-related claims are deemed to have been settled by our 1956 reparations agreement with Japan,” Imperial said.
But for private claims, the diplomat said the government will not stop them from doing so.
“We will not stop of course the victims cause this is an atrocious violence against the women during the war,” he said.
On Tuesday, Jan. 31, surviving Filipino women who were sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War II called on the Japanese government to acknowledge its war crimes and resolve the “comfort women” issue.
In a statement, Lila Pilipina, an organization helping the Filipino women in their fight for justice, said Japan must “take the necessary steps toward a fair and long-overdue resolution of the comfort women issue.”
During the Japanese occupation, Japanese soldiers allegedly abducted about a thousand Filipino women to serve them.
